Econometrics is a two-year master’s program jointly offered by the TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University of Bochum and University of Duisburg-Essen. The program is aimed at quantitatively oriented students who hold a BSc in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or related disciplines. Econometric methods are increasingly gaining importance in research, business and the public sector. Students of Econometrics are capable of using mathematical models to quantitatively describe and analyze problems that arise in companies, research, government, financial institutions and other organizations. They have an extensive understanding of statistical methods and an in-depth knowledge of central economic causal relationships and the resulting econometric questions.

Course of study and modules

The four-semester master’s program in econometrics is devided into compulsory modules, elective courses and closes with the master thesis. In four compulsory modules (ME1 - ME4) with a total amount of 43 credit points, you acquire a sound knowledge in statistics, econometrics and time series analysis. The core curriculum also conveys skills in applied research, statistical programming, research project management and statistical consulting.

Elective modules (ME5 - ME6) train students in economic theory (ME5) provide further specialization in applied (ME6) and theoretical econometrics (ME7). In ME6 and ME7, students focus on a specific field of research according to their individual preferences. This results in a flexible number of credits to be acquired by electives, which must, however, amount to a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 26 credit points in each of the elective module areas.

Curriculum

The program comprises five core and four elective modules, including a six-month Master thesis. Most modules consist of multiple courses which may be chosen according to the individual interests of the students. Core courses teach key concepts in Statistical Theory, Econometrics and Time Series Analysis. The core curriculum also conveys skills in project management, consulting and applied research. A large pool of electives and specialized seminars enables the students to deepen their knowledge in selected fields of econometric theory and applied economic research, e.g., health economics or financial econometrics.

Application, admission and enrolment are administered by TU Dortmund University.

Network and Careers

Graduates are well-equipped for a career in econometrics, empirical economic research, evidence-based political consulting or a subsequent PhD in econometrics or neighbouring disciplines.
