The Master's programme Interactive Media
new from summersemester 2026
Concept and design // Media technology // Interdisciplinary cooperation
Whether smartphone, website, computer game or smart home: all these products and applications not only have to work optimally, they also have to be intuitive to use and communicate seamlessly with each other. This requires creative minds that can build a bridge between design and computer science during the development process. With the Master's programme in Interactive Media, you will deepen your knowledge of computer science, design and media technologies and expand your expertise in all relevant areas to help shape our digital future.Admission requirements
- Bachelor's degree with at least 180 ECTS which includes a specialisation in either media informatics, media design or media technology. Typically, but not exclusively, these are degree programmes such as media informatics, computer science with the study profile digital media, interaction design, interface design or comparable degree programmes. Degree programmes that contain computer science qualifications and media-related qualifications totalling 60 ECTS credits are recognised as comparable. Of these, at least 20 ECTS credits must be allocated to computer science qualifications and at least 20 ECTS credits to media-related qualifications.
- proof of sufficient English B2 language skills are required: TOEFL iBT (minimum 85), IELTS Academic (minimum 6.0), Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) with at least grade B, UniCert (minimum level 2), or a higher education entrance qualification from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
- Portfolio (10 pages, pdf): Applicants must demonstrate sound analytical, conceptual, and technical media skills. This will be demonstrated through a project portfolio focusing on: UI/UX Design / Web and App Development/Programming / AR, VR, and Mixed Reality / 3D and Interactive Environments / Game Design and Game Development / Tangible Interaction and Physical Computing / Other relevant interactive media projects. Please add the following information for each project: A short description of the project, including the title, the year of creation, and the context of development. Highlight your coding skills. Group projects must be clearly identified. Your individual contribution must be explicitly described. Please ensure that only royalty-free stock images are used. Any AI-generated content must be clearly labeled. Only submit projects for which you are the original author/creator.
Content
The English-language Master's programme in Interactive Media expected to start from summersemester 2026 and teaches you in-depth theories, principles, and expertise at the intersection of media design, computer science, media science and media management (start-ups, leadership). You will learn how to develop these independently and apply them in practice to find creative solutions to complex problems. Our areas of teaching include interaction design for two- and three-dimensional spaces, human-computer interaction, generative design, game design and development, computation design, time-based media, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, sensor technology, data visualization, and natural language interaction.Practice-oriented work
The course of study is characterized by a wide range of teaching methods: modern and classic study formats such as projects, group work, lectures, exercises, study trips to partner universities, conference trips and research projects complement each other. This makes the course particularly varied and application-oriented.
The Department of Computer Science and Media has 16 special laboratories with 136 computer workstations and modern technology for practical work, including:
- an AV laboratory,
- a media production laboratory,
- a recording studio with speaker's booth,
- a physical computing lab with a wide variety of micro electronics
- a capturing studio with a video production environment,
- a Motion Capture system,
- an extensive selection of video production equipment,
- VR and MR glasses
- And many more
We are also equipped with the state-of-the-art software suites for:
- Media production (Adobe, Affinity)
- 3D production (Cinema 4D, Blender, Maya)
- Game production (Unity, Unreal)
- Video production (DaVinci Resolve Pro)
- Photogrammetry (Reality Capture, Metashape)
- Generative AI (Stable Diffusion)
The master's programme is characterized by a consistent project and research orientation. The following topics are of particular relevance:
- Web and app development
- Virtual and augmented reality
- Game design
- 3D design
- Artificial intelligence and design
- Interfaces of the future with sensor technology and gestures
- Visual effects (VFX) and compositing
- Film production
- Motion capture
In addition, we cooperate with different universities like the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf and other international universities, such as the University of Tallinn.
How you can specialize
To deepen your knowledge, a wide range of compulsory and elective modules await you in specialized areas of interactive media. Each semester, the department decides which elective modules will be offered. You can find the current range of modules in the lecture directory.
The programme focuses on multiple areas that are increasingly converging and cross-pollinating with innovative developments.
These areas include:
- Interaction design for two- and three-dimensional rooms
- Human Computer Interaction
- Interactive virtual worlds (e.g., Game Design & Development, VR, AR)
- Artificial Intelligence, Computation Design, Generative Design
- Time-Based Media (e.g., film, animation, audio)
