Advanced Materials Characterization and Non-Destructive Testing (M.Sc.)

Expert knowledge on an international level.

With its various methods non-destructive testing is a fundamental component of the quality assurance and control in many areas of the industry today. The step by step courses for examiners offered by the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP) are an established and good basis for operational practice. Increasingly, however, more complete testing strategies have to be developed and implemented. In Germany and many other parts of the world, no adequate academic training has been available for the required engineering personnel. This gap is closed by the master program offered by the Dresden International University (DIU).

The participants of the master program "Advanced Materials Characterization and Non-Destructive Testing (M.Sc.)" acquire sound basic and specialist knowledge in all areas of NDT (you will find further information in the overview of the study contents). Small groups enable efficient and individual learning, supported by sound scientific supervision in theoretical and practical exercises. Students are familiarized with modern equipment that is fundamental to all NDT methods. The practical exercises can take place in several laboratories. An example can be seen in the picture below, where a student is working in one of the laboratories of the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM).

In addition to the scientific qualification, the graduates gain extended international and intercultural experience.

Successful graduates qualify for a career in a variety of very different companies in the fields of transport, energy (including nuclear energy), chemistry, micro- and nanoelectronics as well as public safety institutions and much more. As Europe's largest location for semiconductor production (Silicon Saxony e.V.), Dresden in particular, with its many local semiconductor manufacturers and their suppliers, offers job entry opportunities for graduates of this master program.

The program is tailored for an advanced specialization in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering and leads to promising careers.

Target Group
This course is designed for successful graduates, from engineering, materials science, geoscience, applied physics or related fields and also for people who are working already in the NDT field and those who are seeking careers and advanced specialization in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, as well as in highly diverse companies in transportation, energy (including nuclear), chemistry, micro- and nanoelectronics, and public safety facilities, and more.

The successful completion of the degree entitles the student to work in the research field as well as in practice in industry.

Maybe you work in one of the following areas:

  • Materials scientists - in-depth characterisation up to nano-scale.
  • Mechatronics and robotics engineers - interface sensor technology / measurement technology.
  • Applied physicists & chemists - spectroscopy, structural analysis.
  • Quality and reliability managers in high-tech industries (semiconductors, batteries, hydrogen).
  • Safety and infrastructure inspectors (e.g. bridges, aeroplanes, wind power).
  • Medical technology developers - transfer of radiological/optical methods.
  • Specialists in energy and nuclear technology - continue to emphasise IAEA scholarship reference.
  • Consultants / testing service providers in the NDT service - further academic qualification.

Advantages
  • personal support
  • divers international and intercultural experiences
  • state recognized degree
  • small study and learning groups promote targeted exchange
  • opens many career options

Learning Outcomes: What you will be able to do with the master degree?
Graduates of the M.Sc. Advanced Materials Characterisation and Non-Destructive Testing ...

  • ... are proficient in the entire spectrum of modern materials & structural analysis - from SEM/TEM microscopy to Raman & XPS spectroscopy to X-ray and neutron diffraction; they select suitable methods and interpret results with confidence.
  • ... have in-depth knowledge of electromagnetic, opto-electronic, thermographic, radiophysical and acoustic NDT methods and can develop test strategies for new materials, miniature components and the highest safety requirements.
  • ... design and implement complete measurement and test chain systems, including sensor selection, signal processing and statistical evaluation, and assess their reliability.
  • ... lead projects and interdisciplinary teams in an international environment, present research results in a target group-orientated manner and bring new or improved NDT methods into application.
  • ... have strong scientific skills - from literature research and exposé preparation to independent Master's theses - and are thus ideally prepared for a doctorate.
  • ... strengthen their German, cultural and sustainability skills through the Studium Generale and can move confidently in the German working and living environment.
