Arts and Culture

6200 MD Maastricht
The bachelor programme Arts and Culture covers the development of Western Society. Students will learn to study events from multiple perspectives; the interdisciplinary course includes philosophy, history, science and technology studies, history of art and sociology. Entwining these different approaches, students will answer questions such as:
  • What does it mean when we talk about the good life?
  • What is the role of science in our society?
  • Are modernity and religion, reason and faith absolute opposites or is that just a typically European thought?
Such questions are at the heart of Western identity, yet this culture sits in an increasingly globalised world. The bachelor's programme in Arts and Culture is for students who want to understand the complex interaction between science, culture, politics and the arts in Western society.

The backbone of the Arts and Culture programme is its interdisciplinary approach. In small tutorial groups, you will examine the most important themes of modern western culture from a variety of perspectives and disciplines.  You will learn to understand the often conflicting issues that influence social and cultural debates. The analytical skills you develop will allow you to systematically examine social norms and themes in their cultural and historical context.
